What are the Responsibilities/Duties of a Site Engineer on a construction site?

Civil Site Engineer: 

" A civil site engineer is a window of a construction project in real life ", which through the company can observe the day to day activity, progress and the execution of the project in the real world."

A site engineer is a responsible person, who uses their communication, technical skills and expertise to guide the crew members and ensure the successful completion of the project on time. A site engineer needs to have taken unexpected decisions and actions to come across the problems on the site during execution. 


Responsibilities/Duties of a Site Engineer on a construction site: 

  1.  A site engineer should understand the project drawing given by the design engineer before starting the work.
  2.  Proper planning and scheduling should follow to complete the work on time.
  3.  Day to day progress reports need to be maintained and reported to the Higher authority when asked to submit.
  4. A site engineer has to inform the designer of any changes on the drawing if any problem arises.
  5. A  site engineer needs to take care of the ups and downs of the execution of the projects.
  6. A site engineer should ensure that the quality and the quantity described in the design are the same.
  7. A site engineer has to communicate with the material suppliers, contractor, vendors, workers, and the higher authority. 
  8. Checking of the materials, manpower, machines and tools availability and plane the work accordingly.
  9. if any type of cutting, filling, levelling or survey needs to be performed in the project, the site engineer should manage the contract for that work within the allotted amount of money.
  10. Even though the safety engineer or health officer will be present on the site it is the duty of a  site engineer, to ensure that the workers are following the safety measures as per the safety regulation of the respective state or the country.
  11. A site engineer may need to travel to the other site for machines, materials and tools and simultaneously may handle the other project also.
  12.  Most of the time a site engineer has to spend his time on a construction site.
  13. Taking care of the project and completing the project on time is the main responsibility of a site engineer without any human loss.

Skills and Qualification required for Site Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is the basic requirement, a fresher can apply for a site engineer job. 
  • Diploma in civil engineering with experience can also apply for the site engineer job.
  • should have sound knowledge in Design drawing, construction management, and understanding of standard design code.
  • Should learn basic civil engineering software like - Auto CADD, Revit, and MS Office (Excel) 
  • Should have great writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Should have leadership and project management skills.
  • A hardworking and challenging personality helps to survive in the construction field.
  • And a willingness to learn from seniors through Project work.


Working in a construction company as a site engineer has great advantages for future growth because the execution of a project gives the basic understanding and the implementation of your academic knowledge in the field, bringing satisfaction to a job as a civil engineer.
